These are suggested qualities and measures of these type of athletes, everyone will be different and different in each discipline. Please use this only as a guide.

*Times may be much more varied. Level of intensity and regularity in training are a good indicator of reaching these levels.

Qualities of a “Pitchfork” group Athlete:

Should be very comfortable with brick workouts. Riding ~4x a week, running 3-4x a week, swimming 3x a week. Should know how to weight train. Knows and implements a personal nutrition plan and recovery plan. Knows how to use group workouts for more intensity.

Race Priorities:

  • Collegiate Nationals
  • Draft Legal
  • Conference Championships
  • Age Group Nationals
  • Conference Races
  • Possible 1/2 ironman’s

Males:

  • Swimming 21min or under 1500m
  • Biking 24+ mph in 40k race
  • Running ~6:00/mile for 10k race

Females:

  • Swimming 21min or under 1500m
  • Biking 21+ mph in 40k race
  • Running ~6:30/mile for 10k race

Qualities of a “Scarlet” group Athlete:

Beginning to use brick workouts. Less than 4 years in the sport. Is learning how to group ride, weight train and balance all 3 sports. Nutrition and recovery plans are in the experimental phase. Biking 3x a week, swimming 2-3x a week and running 3x a week.

Race priorities:

  • Collegiate Nationals
  • Conference Championships
  • Conference Races

Males:

  • Swimming 23-25 min 1500m
  • Biking 21-23 mph in a 40k race
  • Running 6:30/mile for 10k

Females:

  • Swimming 23-25 min 1500m
  • Biking avg 18-20mph in a 40k race
  • Running 7:00/mile in a 10k race

Qualities of a “Grey” group Athlete:

Has not yet raced much, if at all. Is new to the triathlon/multisport world and group riding. One or more of the disciplines are new to them or hard to start at. Is focused on getting or staying in shape. Biking focus on comfort 2x a week, swimming is heavily technique oriented 2x a week, running is in base building phase 2x a week.

Race Priorities:

  • Complete 1st triathlon!
  • Complete 1st Olympic distance triathlon
  • Conference races the following summer

Males/Females:

  • Swimming 500 yards or less straight through
  • Biking, has not completed over a 30mi ride yet, working on bike handling skills and comfort
  • Running, fitness and injury prevention is the key focus, 3mi or less straight through
